01Kalahandi at a glance

Rooftop solar and solar irrigation for Kalahandi and Bhawanipatna

Kalahandi covers 7,920 sq km of rugged hills, plateaus and undulating plains, with ranges in the south-east and south rising to between 953 m and 1,229 m (CGWB). The Tel is its main river, and the Indravati, Nagavali and Vansadhara all rise in its south-eastern hills. Bhawanipatna (Bhabanipatana) is the headquarters, and the two subdivisions, Bhawanipatna and Dharamgarh, hold thirteen blocks.

Two farming landscapes sit side by side. The Upper Indravati project allows two crops a year in the southern blocks of Kalampur, Jaipatna and Dharamgarh, an area historically known for rice. Elsewhere farming is mostly rainfed: CGWB counts 109 minor flow projects and 364 government and 174 private lift irrigation projects, and finds groundwater supplying about 24% of kharif and 44% of rabi irrigation potential.

TPWODL’s district figures show rooftop solar taking hold across Kalahandi as well. HELLOCON plans pump, rooftop and commercial systems in Kalahandi from our head office in Bhubaneswar.

04Hills and heat

Solar design for Kalahandi’s hill blocks and hot plains

Kalahandi’s hills climb above 1,200 m in the south-east, while Bhawanipatna on the plains recorded 45.4 °C on 24 May 2026 and 41.5 °C on 13 May 2025. Average rainfall is 1,378.2 mm, but it ranges from 1,111.8 mm to 2,712.9 mm across blocks, and 80-85% of it falls between June and September.

That spread means no single design fits the whole district. On the plains, rooftop arrays need airflow beneath the modules and shaded inverters; in the hills, the survey looks at slope, shade from ridges and trees, and the transport route for equipment. HELLOCON manufactures the GI structures it installs and adapts them to each site.

  • Plains: airflow and shade

Raised modules and a shaded inverter position for Bhawanipatna and Kesinga summers.

  • Hills: slope and shadow

Ridge and tree shadows mapped, with footings set for sloping ground.

  • Monsoon-ready electrics

Sealed junction boxes and drained cable routes for the heavy June-September rains.

05TPWODL connection

Application and metering steps for a TPWODL connection

Check the utility on your electricity bill first; a district name alone does not identify every connection. For a TPWODL household connection, use the national portal together with the utility’s current instructions.

TPWODLTP Western Odisha Distribution LimitedTPWODL net-metering guide

These steps apply to every TPWODL connection in Kalahandi; the division printed on your bill, Kalahandi East or Kalahandi West, tells you which office will inspect the system.

  1. Register the consumer connection on the official PM Surya Ghar portal and follow its application, feasibility and load-related instructions.
  2. Check the vendor available for that application and agree the equipment, installation and metering responsibilities in writing.
  3. Complete the required installation records and coordinate the utility’s inspection, meter arrangements and commissioning.
  4. Retain the commissioning documents and follow the official assistance-claim process. Approval and payment timings depend on the authorities.

06Questions

Questions about solar irrigation and rooftop solar in Kalahandi

Are solar pumps useful in Kalahandi where canal irrigation exists?

Yes, outside the canal commands. Upper Indravati serves the southern blocks, but CGWB finds groundwater supplying about 44% of Kalahandi’s rabi irrigation potential, and hundreds of lift irrigation projects draw from rivers and wells. Solar pumps can power those wells and lift points in daylight.

Which TPWODL office serves Bhawanipatna?

Bhawanipatna is the seat of TPWODL’s Kalahandi Circle, at Bahadurbagicha Pada. The Kalahandi East and Kalahandi West divisions cover the district, and our TPWODL net-metering guide explains the application.

How many homes in Kalahandi have rooftop solar?

TPWODL figures published on 2 September 2026 show 6,529 rooftop solar installations in Kalahandi district. HELLOCON is a registered PM Surya Ghar vendor for TPWODL connections in Kalahandi.
