Define the water requirement first
A solar pump should be selected for the water source and delivery duty rather than horsepower alone. Record the source type, seasonal water availability, required daily volume and the route to the delivery point. Bore depth is not the same as total pumping head. The designer needs the relevant water levels, lift, pipe length and losses, together with the intended operating hours. Bring existing records to a solar pumping assessment instead of choosing a model from a photograph.
Compare a surface pump and a submersible arrangement
The right arrangement depends on source conditions, water levels and the required duty. Request a named pump and controller, the proposed PV schedule and the performance information used for selection. Ask how the system behaves when water is unavailable or solar generation changes. Pump, controller, mounting, pipework and storage must work together. A higher rated motor does not automatically provide the required volume or solve a weak water source.
Check the official agricultural scheme route
MNRE’s PM-KUSUM information distinguishes standalone agricultural pumps and solarisation of grid-connected agricultural pumps. The ministry page lists a scheme period through 31 March 2026; do not treat a historic guideline as proof of an open application window today. Check the current PM-KUSUM portal and Odisha implementing agency for the applicable programme, selection and current availability before making a scheme-dependent purchase.
Read Soura Jalanidhi separately
Odisha’s official solar-pump guideline page describes source/access conditions, assistance restrictions and a maintenance arrangement for the programme it covers. Check the relevant notice and current application position with the department. A programme’s maintenance provision is not a warranty for every privately purchased HELLOCON pump. PM Surya Ghar household rooftop assistance is also a separate scheme and should not be used as a farm-pump subsidy estimate.
Compare quotations and responsibilities
Request the actual pump and controller models, rated duty, PV details, mounting and protection scope, installation work, pipework and commissioning records. Put exclusions and owner responsibilities in writing. Confirm who handles routine maintenance and which company receives warranty claims. Pump, controller, array and installation terms can differ. A scheme name or generic five-year statement should not replace the selected equipment’s written coverage.
Plan service and seasonal operation
Discuss access to the pump, isolation arrangements, water storage and the information needed to report a fault. Keep the installed equipment schedule and service contact available to the operator. Water-quality, source-yield and pump-duty evidence should come from the actual site. For community supply, compare the dual-pump system and water-kiosk applications; those reference arrangements do not establish an agricultural project’s capacity, ownership or scheme approval.
This guide explains general system principles. Final technical suitability and scheme eligibility require project-specific review.
