01Delta district
Rooftop solar and solar pumps across the Kendrapara delta
Kendrapara district (officially spelt Kendrapada since the Odisha Gazette notice of 22 June 2026) lies on the delta formed by branches of the Brahmani, Baitarani and Mahanadi, with a 48 km coastline running from Dhamra Muhan to Batighar. Its disaster management plan lists nine blocks in a single subdivision, Kendrapara and Pattamundai as the two municipalities, and Rajnagar and Mahakalapada as the coastal blocks.
The same plan records that about 70% of residents depend on agriculture, with rice as the principal crop, jute as the main cash crop and coconut as the main horticultural crop, and fishing as the other major occupation. It states that the district has no industry or mining. Bhitarkanika National Park, the second-largest mangrove ecosystem in India and a Ramsar site since 2002, and the Gahirmatha marine sanctuary draw visitors to the coastal blocks.

02Salt, cyclones and tidal floods

Kendrapara’s disaster management plan describes seawater inundation that leaves salt deposits on the surface and tidal ingression that drives monsoon floods.
