01Temple town on the Mahanadi
Rooftop solar and dug-well solar pumps for Sonepur and Subarnapur
Subarnapur district was carved out of Balangir district in April 1993. Its headquarters is Sonepur (Sonpur in the Odisha Gazette notice of 22 June 2026), where the Tel joins the Mahanadi, with the Ong joining a few km to the north, on undulating plains at 200 to 300 m. Two subdivisions cover six blocks, Sonepur, Binika, Tarbha, Dunguripali, Birmaharajpur and Ullunda, with Sonepur municipality and NACs at Tarbha, Binika, Dunguripali and Birmaharajpur.
Sonepur is known as Mandiramalini, a city of more than a hundred temples, and as a handloom centre for tie-and-dye and Bomkai saris, with about 12,000 equipped looms in 2011 data; Tarbha and Binika are known for brass metalwork. Dug wells are common across the district: the CGWB counted 5,282 dug wells with tenda (manual lift) in 2009, against 512 with pumpsets and 22 tube or bore wells, and the Dunguripali and Binika blocks fall within the Hirakud command area.
TPWODL’s district-wise figures published on 2 September 2026 show 3,529 rooftop solar installations in Sonepur (Subarnapur) district. HELLOCON, a registered PM Surya Ghar vendor with TPWODL, plans rooftop systems for homes and workshops and solar pumps for dug wells from our head office in Bhubaneswar.

Dug-well solar pumps, rooftops and temple lighting for Subarnapur
Solar pumps on dug wells
The CGWB counted 5,282 dug wells with manual lift against 512 with pumpsets (2009), and OREDA’s Soura Jalanidhi programme allows dug wells. We size each pump to the well’s depth and yield.Rooftop solar for homes and small workshops

03Heat and dry spells
Solar design for Subarnapur’s 45 °C summers and dry spells
The CGWB gives maximum temperatures from 34.3 °C to 47.7 °C, with May the hottest month at a mean daily maximum of 41.4 °C and December lows near 6 °C. Sonepur recorded 45.2 °C on 24 May 2026 and 46.3 °C on 21 April 2016. Normal rainfall is 1,443.5 mm, about 90% of it in the south-west monsoon; the CGWB describes drought as frequent, yet heavy rain flooded low-lying villages around Birmaharajpur in August 2023.
For a rooftop, the response is airflow under the modules, a shaded and ventilated inverter position and safe access for dust cleaning before the monsoon. For a dug-well pump, it is a design for the lowest water level of the dry season, with the controller in shade and the array on a ground-mounted GI structure we manufacture. Riverside plots near Birmaharajpur also need the controller placed above the 2023 flood level.

04Dug-well survey
What a dug-well solar pump survey in Subarnapur covers
Before proposing a pump for a Subarnapur farm, we record the well itself and the field it serves. Share the well’s location, its approximate depth and the crops you grow; for a home or workshop rooftop, a recent TPWODL bill is enough to begin. Farmers can also check OREDA’s solar irrigation programmes, including Soura Jalanidhi, before the visit.
Site survey checklist
- Well diameter and depth
- Water level before and after the monsoon
- Daily water requirement
- Distance from well to field
- Unshaded spot for the array
- Existing pumpset, if any
05TPWODL connection
Application and metering steps for a TPWODL connection
Check the utility on your electricity bill first; a district name alone does not identify every connection. For a TPWODL household connection, use the national portal together with the utility’s current instructions.
Subarnapur is served by TPWODL’s Sonepur Electrical Division under the Bolangir Circle.
- Register the consumer connection on the official PM Surya Ghar portal and follow its application, feasibility and load-related instructions.
- Check the vendor available for that application and agree the equipment, installation and metering responsibilities in writing.
- Complete the required installation records and coordinate the utility’s inspection, meter arrangements and commissioning.
- Retain the commissioning documents and follow the official assistance-claim process. Approval and payment timings depend on the authorities.
